Inspiration

I really like the into for this video (0-30 seconds) It displays the logo of the band, it also displays the name of the song so its an introduction to the video, I want to try and do something like this for my project.

Logo analysis

The logos in 1, are from bands that have heavy dominating vocals as well as instrumentals, all three of the logos are pretty much unreadable and have a very complex shape to them, but do actually displays the title text of the band name. The other 3 logos in 2, are all from bands which do not contain vocals at all, all the logos are very simple and easy to read, they're also very pleasing visually when looked at. In the local music scene just by seeing readable and non-readable logos you can get a general idea of what genre of music the band might be.

1.
Bands that have readable/mostly readable logos will tend to be more interesting when it comes to the instrumentals, and may also include singing (or in the scene singing is referred to as "clean" vocals). Bands that would be involved would be: Exist Immortal, The Word Alive, Motionless In White, The Contortionist, Polyphia and Plini
2.
These are bands that would have possibly less interesting/fast paced guitar, and more evil and slow note structure to their songs, as the patterns from the guitar word in darker and minor scales, this does not mean that the songs are any less harder to play, but the songs will be structured with vocals in mind, as a separate instrument.
Bands that would be involved would be: Carnifex, Suicide Silence, Whitechapel, Acrania, Ingested and Xisforeyes
We did a lip sync video together, and I know. We're fabulous.

Location inspiration

In this video they use an old run down broken area, the reason to this is because the song is about the breakdown of humanity, and all the problems that have been caused by humans, and that we are the earth's downfall, so that the destroyed building works perfectly with the theme of the song.

Proposal

Green Screen

I used this video in order to figure out how to green screen, although this video is created as a half informational and entertainment video it was still just as helpful as a straightforward guide, my school has the supplies that enables me to be able to do this without having to travel or buy anything expensive.
Items needed:
- 2 - 3 lights, one facing the camera and others facing the green screen
- Chroma key green coloured surface
- A camera

I took inspiration off of the video "Tamle" by Tyler the Creator, in the video there's a segment where a green screen has been used to place him on top of an animal, I intend to create something similar to this for my music video.

In the music video for Toxicity by System of a Down, it’s displayed as a performative music video opposed to a narrative, or abstract video, which is where the video is focussed on the band rather than creating a story behind the music or having the video not very relative to the song itself.
In this video they use a large range of camera angles, starting with a very low angle/worm eye view angle on the floor, and as the second angle comes in, it’s edited to the beat of the song, where the first chorus riff comes in and the location and angle changes, the video then proceeds in a very aggressive editing style which follows the rhythm of the guitar while it plays, they use panning skills with a lot of medium shot angles to portray the band, most of the shots include more than one member of the band whereas some shots include just a single member, these shots tend to be still shots such as the shot at 0:32 seconds whereas the shots that include more members of the band tend to be panning in some form or the target of the shot is moving around the scenery.
From 0:38 seconds, as the more heavier part of the song subsides and the more calming riff starts to play there’s also a transition in the camera, it changes from a white background to a darker black background, also the camera angles do not change from being at a medium shot, so there’s no high angles or low angles. The members of the band are having moving images projected onto them so there are close up shots being used so the images are more easily visible and are also becoming the target of the shot, this projection is also being used for the main lighting in the shot as it’s the key that illuminates the performers, there are also what seems like floodlights in front of them to keep their faces and features visible, and there are backup lights that project into the floor so the whole body of each person are clear yet still able to maintain a dark room. The editing for the slow more calm parts of the song (example is 0:38 – 1:15) due to the tempo of the song which is different to the tempo and the editing of the white/light room.
From the point of 2:05 – 2:12, the video has an element of a narrative video, where the lyrics are “eating seeds is a past time activity” the camera shows the four members of the band sitting with a pile of seeds eating them, this is of an irregular pattern for a performative video but because it’s such a small cut scene it has a great effect on the video, as the editing and lighting of it match the parts of the video that it’s placed in. From this point on the video somewhat changes, where the light room was where the heavier parts of the song were played and the darker room was where the more soothing parts were, are changed, and as a heavier riff comes in they are played in both of the rooms and the editing switches between the two, the last part of the editing/camera work is when the most aggressive riff starts 2:41 – 3:05 where the camera shakes to distort and disrupt the image on the screen giving a more angry effect which was the goal of the video, the editing also becomes more fast paced which is relative to the tempo. Towards the end of the video they use a time lapse as the vocalist holds a longer note which adds a great effect to the video and editing in my opinion, the clothes worn for this time lapse are completely black with the darker lighting, and all the light is focussed on the faces as it quickly rushes past them.

Inspiration + Lighting

Mute the audio before you watch it, you'll hate it.
From this video you can see the effects that different lighting can give off, the entire video is filmed very dark, using smoke and flood lights so this gives the video the effect of a mystery, not being able to distinguish the characters properly. As you can see in this screenshot, the lighting gives an effect off the top of the guitar, where the tuning pegs are just white circles and you can easily see the direction of lighting due to the dark room. Also the angle that the camera is at facing down the guitar is an angle that I would like to use, this angle is also common when it comes to instrumental playthroughs in the genre of metal.

Inspiration

This is a general playthrough video that a band would do for one of their songs, I would draw inspiration from this due to the way they play their guitars, just in the same location with a lot of focus on what they're playing rather than things going on in the background.

The camera usage in this video has positives and negatives, I like the non-static camera, as it moves around and pans around the guitar, but I feel that the camera being still in some shots doesn't make the playthrough interesting and somewhat boring.

I feel that the editing is far too slow, the shots are left for too long without changing them, but some of the effects that are used are done at well timed spots in the video, with the effects being on beat also.

Bo Diddley

In the 1960, fashion was a large part of the influential movement in part with the media. After World War II the 60's became a time period where the way you dressed and looked became massively important, and also the media bumped up the drive of the sexual appeal to the public, making it more of a commonly seen thing when it came to the media, and also plays a part in fashion that was designed in those times. In the video of Bo Diddley performing, it's apparent that from the media's influence people were more susceptible to thinking that they needed to keep up with the current fashion state, dressing similar and also longer hair for men became a strong fashion statement. During the war, there was a difference between men and women, obviously, the war was taking place, but once the war ended and all the propaganda distributed by the media had stopped, taking people out of the phases of war, it was a time to relax and sit back, people became less war driven and more liberal to things, and the 60s became a phase in the world for partying. In the video, with the 3 woman standing up by the microphone, they express themselves through the way that they look, their hair has more volume and their clothes are more revealing, and they have tassels behind them connecting their clothing together which is a part of the fashion styles that were coming in during this time period. Musicians began to take more drugs to influence their music, and the same with fashion, as these were more easily obtainable after the war, and the music then created influenced people to do the drugs that created the music they listen to, and creativity flourished due to creation being neglected previously.

Whatever had been put into the media and portrayed as "current" would take an effect on the people, whatever the time period, but this also works with people expressing themselves and the media taking note on how they're acting to please the public, and this resulted in three different aspects blooming during the 60s, the music, the photography and the fashion. In conclusion "the swinging 60s" was a phase of celebration and expression through the people and media alike.
