How to colour grade videos

I watched this video in order to help me colour grade with Sony Vegas. I used this video for a guide of how to colour grade the video, I used the black and white filter to make it slightly darker to give it a more defined look, and then I further refined it but sharpening up the edges slightly by using "Sharpen".

Music video rough cut #1

Rough cut for my video For the final thing I'm also going to figure out a way to get rid of the watermark that Sony Vegas places. Like why would you even put that in your program

Saturday 20 December 2014

Editing the video together

I downloaded Sony Vegas to be able to edit away from school, also I'd be able to play around and test some effects for my video.

All of my footage

We started filming

I had to wait until the weekend before I could start filming, to give time to the other guitarist to get to mine.

Picture run through for my music video

I spent a lot of time developing the anamatic for my video so that when it came to editing it, I was able to do it quickly without hesitation. This is more of a guide to my camera angles that I'm going to use in general.

Inspiration from my lip syncing video

From the video of us lip syncing, we have a form of montage at the beginning of the video, with multiple camera angles with different things within them, jumping from one to another so it may also be a cut shot. I like the use of the of the camera that Luke did, where he wasn't static with it, and moved around to get a better angle. When it comes to filming my music video. (as Luke is helping me with the camera work) I want him to use the movements of the camera to make my video more fast paced and entertaining

Monday 8 December 2014

Camera angles

After looking at camera angles from different videos of people playing, I've noticed that there are a few common angles that are used often by each and every different band. I wish to also use these angles but in a non-static state. The shots that are used focus on the guitar as the subject, and the majority of the time have the entire instrument on it, focusing less on the person playing, as the video is a guitar playthrough so it makes sense to focus on the guitar rather than anything else.

The first angle is a high angle shot from the POV of the headstock of the guitar, facing downwards over the strings and body

The second angle is a low angle shot facing upwards along the neck of the guitar

Another angle is a wide shot that contains the entire guitar and around 90% of myself

Sunday 7 December 2014

Misc-en-scene

When filming I decided to make the misc-en-scene for the background of the people playing, I used the typical items that make it seem like a group of friends getting drunk. I also included merchandise for the band and had a smaller pile for the black shirts compared to the white shirts, this is due to more black shirts being bought by fans rather than white shirt. Also a mobile phone, because this is a realistic music video and normal people own phones

Opening

We went to the park in a local area to go and find a place to film for the opening of my video, as I wanted to make the text appear through smoke, I smoked a cigarette on camera so I could edit it on After Effects. I also did this to stick to the stereotypes of a "rockstar".

Luck on my side

Trying to put these pictures into place is like playing Jenga. We went to film today and the scenery was seemingly perfect for us, we managed to catch a orange sky sunset and there was every a mass amount of fog too. How lucky is that?

Planning shots

This is the opening shot, we will be facing away from the sun to somewhat give it more of a lowkey lighting, and also a light behind the camera to make us actually visible.

Location decision for music video

As I've said previously, I wanted to create something that relates to underground bands trying to make it in the music industry, so I picked some places that I would think bands would hang out. Then I remembered, oh wait, I'm in a band myself, so this made the locations very easy as to where we'd hang out as a group.

A house, an opened spaced room where we can all chill

A local park to hang around in when bored

Practice room, where you, (you guessed it) practice.

The reason I chose to use a house was because it's more practical than the others. Filming ourside is reliant on the whether, the temperature, it's harder to maintain lighting, and the reason I didn't choose the practice room is because of the amount of money paid for a limited amount of time. I wouldn't want to spend a lot of money on hiring a room to run the risk of us not having enough time to film, either being people running late, unorganisation and other factors. The house gives me unlimited access where I can control the lighting, the whether (because it's indoors) and it's easier to manage other people being reliable. Plus as I had a limited time with the other guitarist from my band to do the playthrough with me as he lives in Whitstable, I needed to have the most reliable and solid location to film in. Although despite all of this, because my opening will be very short I want to attempt and film it outside.

Tuesday 11 November 2014

Instragram promotion idea

I created these 5 images for the release of the music video, where over a period of 5 days one image would be posted, this would be to hype up the fans and to build anticipation for the release of the music video. I also created a competition where we were able to share the image for a reward of free merchandise.

Actors in my music video, costumes

All of the actors in my video will be dressed in the stereotypical clothing that I explained earlier, these are three of the actors which will feature in my video

I've made an instagram for our band, I will use this to post photos and videos of our band for teasers of our upcoming music video. Here's a link to it

This is our live intro that I'm mixing with the song so I'll be able to make an intro for my project, but I need to film the opening before I play around with the times on the meida

Testing the camera and small editing

I teamed up with Luke to help me record this, I liked some of the shots that we used, but unfortunately some of them were too long in the edit, as a typical music video changes shot every 2 - 3 seconds and there's a couple of longer shots in our video. I played with the focus on the camera to change it from different objects and I quite like the effect it's given off. For an actual part of the video I will pay more attention to my misc-en-scene and my lighting as well as keeping an eye on my editing.

My gear

The guitar I am using is a Schecter SGR C-7 for the video, and the amp which will be a part of the misc-en-scene is a Marshall MG-FX50

Treatment

Treatment

The ideas that I have for my video are based off play-through videos from bands around the world, as it’s a common type of video for this genre of music, I plan to use my house as the location as previously said and I don’t intend to use the entire band, as it’s hard enough putting a whole band together and getting them to learn a song, and the band that I am in live at various distances from each other (Whitstable, Brighton) which makes being in the same place at one time isn’t plausible, as we often struggle to practice within our free time, also due to the genre I am limited to the amount of people I’d be able to use for the video as some techniques used for playing it aren’t simple and easy to do, thus making the authenticity of the video hard if someone isn’t able to actually play the song. I plan to just use guitars, bass, and vocals, as drums would be far harder to keep on top of which is a shame. I want to mainly focus on the guitars because it’s based for a play-through video.

The costumes won’t be much of a problem for this video, as the people in the video would wear clothing that is specific to the genre itself, these items include:

 -              Skinny jeans & baggy short (black or blue/band merchandise)

-               Baggy t-shirts or vests (black or white, also burgundy)

-               Beanie hats & snapback hats

-               Mainly canvas styled shoes

-               Baggy hoodies (Black/White)

Also the misc-en-scene with the video will obviously include a guitar as it’s what we will be playing the song on, I intend to also use the typical associated items that band would be assumed to have in a situation as this as a touring situation or living the “rockstar lifestyle”, so scattered around the room will be items that are relevant to parties and items that would be seen if a group of friends were hanging out, such as alcohol, playing on game consoles, typical laughing and generally being stupid together as what friends do.

The editing for this video I intend for there to be a new camera angle or shot ranging around every 2 – 4 seconds, the camera angles that I want to use will be based around the angles of the guitar as that’s my main focus, these will include high angle shots for pointing down the neck of the guitar for a demonstration of what’s being played, also connected with low angle shots from the guitar. Wide angle shots of what’s being played along to the song. I do not intend for many of my camera angles to be steady as I prefer angles when they’re panning or moving around which I learnt from last year, as many/all of the shots that were used tended to still or with a slight pan here and there. Whereas this year from just message around with camera angles in my free time I’ve noticed the drastic difference in effects given off when the camera is moving.

For editing in my piece I would like to experiment with slow motion depending on the frame rate of the camera, of course not all of the shots will be in slow motion but I want to be able to utilise it and test myself as I am yet to experiment with editing further than just basic cuts. As I said previously I wish to edit to camera angle every 2 – 4 seconds and very rarely go over, the editing must stick to the beat of the track and go in time with each riff of the song.

I want to use lighting for when the guitars are being played, although the guitars being used have a gloss finish rather than a satin or matte finish and the light may reflect, I wish to make it obvious that the subject of the camera angles is the guitar, I will stick to high-key lighting throughout my video due to the whole point of it is to be visible as I want there to be an obvious target, I will use slightly more low-key lighting when it comes to shots that aren’t about the song being played also.

Inspiration

The whole point of being in a band is to have fun, to spend time with your friends and do the things that make you happy when you write music, so I'm taking every single band I listen to as my inspiration, every band that breaks out from the underground local scene and makes it big always have the same state of mind, always to have fun, and now you're getting paid for it! I want to be able to recreate this fun atmosphere of a group of friends in my video.

Representations of a rockstar

Some stereotypes the resolve around rockstars are that they smoke, drink, that they're rebelious and other things like that. The movie This is Spinal Tap (1982) displays the stereotypes perfectly, the moral of the story is that the band called Spinal Tap go out on tours as an English rock band group, performing and doing the stereotypical things that bands would do. Throughout the movie they're shouting louding, pretty much always smoking, not paying attention to others around them and just being self centred, and wanting to stand out above everyone else. In my music video I want to create some stereotypes of rock stars. Like that's seen in This Is Spinal Tap.

Inspiration from another student

From watching this video I have gathered things I like about it, things I have seen for inspiration in mine, this guy doesn't have any lyrics in his video much like my song doesn't, and I also like the use of slow motion in his editing, he edits the slow motion along to the beat, sometimes speeding it up or creating cut shots to a very short time forward in the same shot, which he demonstrates at 1:05 - 1:11 very well, he manages to keep very close and on time with the beat and it's something I want to be able to make clear in my video as well, the slow motion in this video can display the slow calming beat to the song which fits perfectly.

The Overseers

Us two together make the two members of our band "Overseer" the name behind the band is for us to be overlooking things, overlooking the community that we're in as a band and making new friends and connections to help us grow and evolve. (I know, it's a loving gaze)

Tumblr moodboard

I made a Tumblr to post images for inspiration for my video, I've never used Tumblr before this but it's a popular blogging website for photos. I've used this Tumblr to post inspirational photos and GIF files (small videos) for my video.

Explanation of Logo

As I've previously stated the reason that I have chosen the name Overseer, that we're overlooking the small community in which my band partakes in. The logo I've created represents the sparse amount of bands in a local scene that play, and the small amount of gigs that are put on for smaller bands rather than larger ones. I've changed the kerning of the text the separate the letters, this is due to the small amount of bands in local scenes and gigs, as they're spread out and normally have to travel to get to gigs to play, I've also used a very clear and obvious font, this is due to the lack of vocals, as bands with heavy demanding vocals tend to have very scratchy unclear logos, whereas bands that use only the instruments to create the sounds, tend to have lighter more readable logos to attract more of an audience rather than just the people in the metal scene.

Inspiration

I really like the into for this video (0-30 seconds) It displays the logo of the band, it also displays the name of the song so its an introduction to the video, I want to try and do something like this for my project.

Saturday 27 September 2014

Logo analysis

The logos in 1, are from bands that have heavy dominating vocals as well as instrumentals, all three of the logos are pretty much unreadable and have a very complex shape to them, but do actually displays the title text of the band name. The other 3 logos in 2, are all from bands which do not contain vocals at all, all the logos are very simple and easy to read, they're also very pleasing visually when looked at. In the local music scene just by seeing readable and non-readable logos you can get a general idea of what genre of music the band might be.

1.
Bands that have readable/mostly readable logos will tend to be more interesting when it comes to the instrumentals, and may also include singing (or in the scene singing is referred to as "clean" vocals). Bands that would be involved would be: Exist Immortal, The Word Alive, Motionless In White, The Contortionist, Polyphia and Plini
2.
These are bands that would have possibly less interesting/fast paced guitar, and more evil and slow note structure to their songs, as the patterns from the guitar word in darker and minor scales, this does not mean that the songs are any less harder to play, but the songs will be structured with vocals in mind, as a separate instrument.
Bands that would be involved would be: Carnifex, Suicide Silence, Whitechapel, Acrania, Ingested and Xisforeyes
We did a lip sync video together, and I know. We're fabulous.

Location inspiration

In this video they use an old run down broken area, the reason to this is because the song is about the breakdown of humanity, and all the problems that have been caused by humans, and that we are the earth's downfall, so that the destroyed building works perfectly with the theme of the song.

Proposal

Green Screen

I used this video in order to figure out how to green screen, although this video is created as a half informational and entertainment video it was still just as helpful as a straightforward guide, my school has the supplies that enables me to be able to do this without having to travel or buy anything expensive.
Items needed:
- 2 - 3 lights, one facing the camera and others facing the green screen
- Chroma key green coloured surface
- A camera

I took inspiration off of the video "Tamle" by Tyler the Creator, in the video there's a segment where a green screen has been used to place him on top of an animal, I intend to create something similar to this for my music video.

Sunday 21 September 2014

In the music video for Toxicity by System of a Down, it’s displayed as a performative music video opposed to a narrative, or abstract video, which is where the video is focussed on the band rather than creating a story behind the music or having the video not very relative to the song itself.
In this video they use a large range of camera angles, starting with a very low angle/worm eye view angle on the floor, and as the second angle comes in, it’s edited to the beat of the song, where the first chorus riff comes in and the location and angle changes, the video then proceeds in a very aggressive editing style which follows the rhythm of the guitar while it plays, they use panning skills with a lot of medium shot angles to portray the band, most of the shots include more than one member of the band whereas some shots include just a single member, these shots tend to be still shots such as the shot at 0:32 seconds whereas the shots that include more members of the band tend to be panning in some form or the target of the shot is moving around the scenery.
From 0:38 seconds, as the more heavier part of the song subsides and the more calming riff starts to play there’s also a transition in the camera, it changes from a white background to a darker black background, also the camera angles do not change from being at a medium shot, so there’s no high angles or low angles. The members of the band are having moving images projected onto them so there are close up shots being used so the images are more easily visible and are also becoming the target of the shot, this projection is also being used for the main lighting in the shot as it’s the key that illuminates the performers, there are also what seems like floodlights in front of them to keep their faces and features visible, and there are backup lights that project into the floor so the whole body of each person are clear yet still able to maintain a dark room. The editing for the slow more calm parts of the song (example is 0:38 – 1:15) due to the tempo of the song which is different to the tempo and the editing of the white/light room.
From the point of 2:05 – 2:12, the video has an element of a narrative video, where the lyrics are “eating seeds is a past time activity” the camera shows the four members of the band sitting with a pile of seeds eating them, this is of an irregular pattern for a performative video but because it’s such a small cut scene it has a great effect on the video, as the editing and lighting of it match the parts of the video that it’s placed in. From this point on the video somewhat changes, where the light room was where the heavier parts of the song were played and the darker room was where the more soothing parts were, are changed, and as a heavier riff comes in they are played in both of the rooms and the editing switches between the two, the last part of the editing/camera work is when the most aggressive riff starts 2:41 – 3:05 where the camera shakes to distort and disrupt the image on the screen giving a more angry effect which was the goal of the video, the editing also becomes more fast paced which is relative to the tempo. Towards the end of the video they use a time lapse as the vocalist holds a longer note which adds a great effect to the video and editing in my opinion, the clothes worn for this time lapse are completely black with the darker lighting, and all the light is focussed on the faces as it quickly rushes past them.

Inspiration + Lighting

Mute the audio before you watch it, you'll hate it.
From this video you can see the effects that different lighting can give off, the entire video is filmed very dark, using smoke and flood lights so this gives the video the effect of a mystery, not being able to distinguish the characters properly. As you can see in this screenshot, the lighting gives an effect off the top of the guitar, where the tuning pegs are just white circles and you can easily see the direction of lighting due to the dark room. Also the angle that the camera is at facing down the guitar is an angle that I would like to use, this angle is also common when it comes to instrumental playthroughs in the genre of metal.

Saturday 13 September 2014

Inspiration

This is a general playthrough video that a band would do for one of their songs, I would draw inspiration from this due to the way they play their guitars, just in the same location with a lot of focus on what they're playing rather than things going on in the background.

The camera usage in this video has positives and negatives, I like the non-static camera, as it moves around and pans around the guitar, but I feel that the camera being still in some shots doesn't make the playthrough interesting and somewhat boring.

I feel that the editing is far too slow, the shots are left for too long without changing them, but some of the effects that are used are done at well timed spots in the video, with the effects being on beat also.

Bo Diddley

In the 1960, fashion was a large part of the influential movement in part with the media. After World War II the 60's became a time period where the way you dressed and looked became massively important, and also the media bumped up the drive of the sexual appeal to the public, making it more of a commonly seen thing when it came to the media, and also plays a part in fashion that was designed in those times. In the video of Bo Diddley performing, it's apparent that from the media's influence people were more susceptible to thinking that they needed to keep up with the current fashion state, dressing similar and also longer hair for men became a strong fashion statement. During the war, there was a difference between men and women, obviously, the war was taking place, but once the war ended and all the propaganda distributed by the media had stopped, taking people out of the phases of war, it was a time to relax and sit back, people became less war driven and more liberal to things, and the 60s became a phase in the world for partying. In the video, with the 3 woman standing up by the microphone, they express themselves through the way that they look, their hair has more volume and their clothes are more revealing, and they have tassels behind them connecting their clothing together which is a part of the fashion styles that were coming in during this time period.
